Shower Good, Rain Scary?
Before I say anything I want to thank Trisha and Ivy for the links. I bookmarked them both! :)
Today was another of those perfect Oregon days. I woke up to the sight of heavy dark clouds and the sounds of tires slissshhing on the road just beyond our backyard. I could smell rain. It was lovely. I love it when mist covers the land. The clouds are lower and a big gauzier and seem to just sort of drape themselves over the hills. It looks like somebody just dropped an armload of tulle over the countryside.
Living in the desert, I lived for the tiny windows of rain that would pop up a few times a year. More than one day of rain in a row caused the desert residents to start asking "Is flood season coming?" I used to think this was preposterous. Then I learned that there are no underground sewers in Las Vegas.
In Las Vegas everything runs from septic tanks and such into canals that empty out into Lake Mead (and that is one of the reasons it is such a funky color sometimes). When it rains, if there isn't a drainage canal closeby, the water stands and really does flood everything. Ten minutes of a light rain by Oregonian standards is a disaster to any Las Vegan. Even so, when the drops would start to fall, as everybody else would freak out and run for cover, I would freak out in a much different way and run for the outdoors.
I'm sure they thought I was crazy, jumping in puddles like that. I, in turn, thought they were a bit bizarre. Here were people that showered at least once a day running from some water drops. Isn't it funny how people will voluntarily step into a shower, even if the water is freezing, but will run away screaming from a small rainshower?
People are weird.
In other news, last weekend I bought the Yellowcard's Ocean Avenue CD. It is absolutely fabulous. I command you all to go buy it. Right now. Chop chop, off you go!
