A Spectrum Jump

Today Mom and I went to see Princess Diaries 2. It was really cute. It's worth the price of the ticket, if for no other reason than to see Larry Miller honk like a moose. Twice. Have I piqued your curiosity? Good, now go see it.

Movies like Princess Diaries always make me gooey inside and girlishly hopeful for a fairy tale future, so I did what any self-respecting wannabe writer would do in my situation: I went home and watched Swimming With Sharks.

PD2 is good crunchy entertainment. It's meant to make your brain say Mmmm No Thinking Required. Me Likey. There are some sweet parts, some bittersweet parts and some fantastically funny parts, and when it's over you get up and go outside and notice the birds chirping and the blue sky and feel that all is right with the world.

Swimming With Sharks is darker but still has it's fabulously funny moments. It's startingly raw and I dig that. It doesn't go over the top in trying to be an artsy indie flick but it isn't a bit glossy hollywood either. Frank Whaley (GoodNESS I love him!) does a wonderful turn as both a bumbling, stuttering, wide eyed innocent kid and a slick, mean, and sharp suit. And his, "I'm sorry" is enough to break your heart. Have I mentioned I LOVE Frank Whaley? Oh I did? Twice now? Oh well let me rephrase: I loooooooooooove Frank Whaley! Kevin Spacey isn't any presence to sneeze at either, but for me Whaley is the reason to watch the film. When the film finishes, the response is to slump down in your chair and go "Whoa." and if you're like me, reach for the remote control because you immediately want to watch it all over again.

A good day, movie-wise.
