Freakin' A...
I can't decide whether to smash something or burst into tears, this frustrates me so badly.
I want so badly to write about this. I can rant and rave about this with the best of them, but the sadness in me is greater than my fight right now. This thing could be voted on as early as Wednesday. Wednesday people. How many people agree when I say that I don't think that's enough time for our senators to remember that they are supposed to be voting on the basis of the people they were elected to represent?
The thing I can't get over, are his definitions of marriage. Forget the gender thing for a second. While it's atrocious, check this out. Throughout the article he defines marriage as the following:
*civilization's must fundamental institution *the basis of an orderly society *the defining promise of a life.
Maybe this is why so many heterosexual marriages break up--the pressure is just too much. Forget the pressure a husband and wife feel trying to keep their marriage healthy for Each Other. They have the weight of civilization as we know it on their shoulders.
Being single, (and a tad emotional with a tendency to over-react) I am offended by these definitions. Because I am single, does that mean that I contribute nothing to society? Maybe simply being single means that I am part of the problem. If marriage truly is the basis of an orderly society, does that mean that children aren't really our future unless they're married? That's a lot harder of a chorus for Whitney Houston to sing. Because I'm single, does that mean my life is unfulfilled and pointless? If my life's promise is truly to be married then why did I waste my time on education and work? Why didn't I just marry the first guy I looked at (who wasn't a relative)? My friend is a single mother, is she the reason our country can't kick it's meth habit?
Mr President, you say that by allowing people of the same gender to marry, then marriage becomes nothing more than a legal contract. I'm sorry if I'm missing something here, but how is that different than heterosexual marriage? Maybe the best way to solve this problem isn't by defining who can and cannot enter into legally bound, but to do away with the legality of the process altogether. Do you think you'd have any voters left if you said that from now on the heterosexuals could only have committment ceremonies, but no legal ties or responsibilities to each other?
You says you want to keep marriage tied to it's religious and cultural roots, which would be desecrated if members of the same gender were allowed wed (not an exact quote, I'm summarizing). Back in the day, weren't women sold to the men they married, thereby making them slaves? Wasn't divorce once considered a sin too? Do you want to go back to those roots? Or are you saying that your Bible says homosexual marriage is wrong and sinful so therefore all Americans, regardless of religious belief, have to live by what your Bible says. Doesn't that take away the right to religious freedom, as guaranteed in the First Amendment? Or... maybe we should just get rid of that too. After all, you've done enough to steal our basic first amendment rights with your Patriot Act, why not just get rid of the amendment altogether so you don't have to feel so guilty?
You claim a constitutional amendement is the only way to go because it is a law that individual courts cannot overrule. Sir, I hate to tell you this, but there already IS such an amendment. It's the Fourteenth Amendment. I know you don't have enough fingers to count that high, sir, but that doesn't mean you can pretend it doesn't exist. Although, in looking over the text of the Fourteenth Amendment, maybe this new amendment of yours should reverse it as well. You've already violated section three. You've denied section five in that instead of allowing Congress to enforce the rights of the States in their decisions to allow gay marriage, you're calling for a vote to ban it (which will reverse the State's decisions)....nevermind that calling for the ban in the first place violates section one.
Wow, now that's something to be proud of. You are calling for an amendment that will not only revoke the First (and most beloved) and Fourteenth Amendments, but will revoke the Constitutional decree of the Separation of Church and State. What a fantastic idea when there are only four months left until the election.
Bushie, I have three questions for you:
1) Are you TRYING to get fired? 2) Will you file for unemployment when you are?
Or 3) Are you just jealous because gay guys are more popular than you are?
**Question for the readers: How long do you give me before Rumsfeld himself comes knocking on my door? I hope they let me send postcards from prison.
